The Vely chatbot: a persistent, minimizable, non-modal assistant docked beside the page content. The conversation survives navigation, minimize, and reload — only the × button ends it.

This is the app-shell view. The lifecycle deep-dive (state machine, ownership, spatial spec, resume, security) lives in ../ai/persistent-chatbot.md. The chatbot-vs-deskbot product contract lives in ../ai/surfaces.md.


Lifecycle

Three states, owned by a client-only module singleton (src/lib/state/chatbot-session.svelte.ts, chatbotSession) — not the modals store. The singleton owns the live @ai-sdk/svelte Chat, so the thread outlives the panel unmounting (minimize, navigation, cross-group AppShell remount, locale switch).

State Meaning
closed No live thread. Entered only by the × button or session teardown.
open Non-modal, page interactive. Docks as a column (desktop) / bottom sheet (mobile).
minimized Thread + any in-flight stream alive, parked. Surfaced in the sidebar / mobile bubble.
  • Minimize (never destroys): the button; Esc (focus inside the panel); Ctrl+J; following one of Vely's same-tab links; another modal opening.
  • Destroy (closed): the × button only.
  • Restore: the sidebar "Resume Vely" trigger (desktop), the VelyMinimizedBubble (mobile), or Ctrl+J.
  • Teardown: SessionMonitor calls chatbotSession.reset() on logout/expiry (aborts the stream, clears the resume pointer).

Panel

Non-modal: desktop docks as a full-height right-hand column (<main> reflows via md:pr-[28rem], never overlaid); mobile is a bottom sheet. Header carries four buttons — history, new chat (+), minimize (), close (×).

On public pages a site-awareness disclosure chip ("Asking about ") sits above the input, signalling that Vely knows your current route; it is absent on private routes (/app, /admin, /auth). The chip shows if and only if the route is in the prompt this turn. See ../ai/site-awareness.md. v1 built (dev, uncommitted).

AppShell.svelte mounts the panel only while chatbotSession.phase !== 'closed' (the heavy AI graph stays out of the initial payload). See ../ai/persistent-chatbot.md for ownership and resume, and ../ai/README.md for provider configuration.

The status row is honest about the wait. An assistant frame exists from the stream's start on (~0.5 s in); the first word comes seconds later, after retrieval and the model's first step. Chatbot.svelte keeps the row up while awaitingAnswer(messages) — the last message is the user's, or the assistant's frame holds no text yet — and labels it from the trace the server streams on the message (turnProgress in composites/chatbot/turn-progress.ts): the most recently started step that is still active → "Searching the docs…" (any retrieval lane), "Reading the catalog…" (catalog), "Thinking…" (generate). Tool calls the model makes render as their own rows (ToolCallStatus over the SDK's tool-<name> parts: pending → running → done | failed), so a two-step turn reads as a sequence, not a pause.

The composer stays usable. The textarea is never disabled by a turn (only by the sign-in gate), so the caret survives the answer and the next question can be typed while it streams. Send becomes Stop (chatbotSession.stop() → the SDK aborts the fetch; received tokens stay); Enter and a second Send are held until the turn ends — one turn in flight (submit() refuses while isStreaming).

Stop stops the model, not just the fetch. The dropped connection reaches the server as the turn's cancellation (startCancellation, $lib/server/http/cancellation.ts: the response body's cancel() — what the Node bridge calls when the socket closes — joined with the platform's request.signal). Every model call of the turn carries it, so the provider stops streaming instead of running on to its 30 s timeout. What had reached the client is persisted as the message's content (charged as unknown usage — the SDK only totals a finished step), so the conversation resumes with the partial answer the user saw; nothing is cooled and no error frame is written. Stop during retrieval, before the model was called, never calls it — an aborted request still counts against a per-day quota. One runtime caveat: the dev container runs Vite under Bun, whose node:http never reports the dropped socket to the response, so in dev a Stop still reaches only the client; on Node (adapter-node, Vercel's Node runtime) the model stops — see http/cancellation.ts.

Error States

The server never lets provider prose reach the client. Every failure is classified (classifyAiError — by the provider's HTTP status for an APICallError, never by its message) and arrives in one of two shapes, decided by whether the answer had started:

chatbotSession.lastError holds the frame text the SDK reports through onError; the panel reads it before chat.error, parses the [kind] prefix (parseAiErrorKind, $lib/types/ai-error.ts) and words the box itself — the user-safe server text is a fallback for other clients, not what Vely shows. Both are cleared by the next send and by a new chat.

An error frame after content is never sent: the client would drop the partial answer on it (ai #7562). The rule and its rotation semantics live in src/lib/server/ai/_shared/streaming-turn.ts.


Rate Limiting

Critical: AI API calls are expensive. Rate limiting prevents abuse and cost overruns.

Implementation

Limiters are built with createLimiter from $lib/server/http/rate-limit.ts and keyed on the user ID. Layer one limiter per window. See abuse/rate-limits.md for the factory contract and limiter catalog.
