Principles (Core Rules)

  • Location is meaning. A file's path is its first documentation.
  • Dependencies flow one direction. Domain → infrastructure, never the reverse. Cycles are bugs.
  • Sibling files share concern, not coincidence. Co-location implies cohesion.
  • Names traverse downward in specificity. $lib/server/auth/sessions.ts reads as a path of nested intent.
  • One canonical home per concept. Duplicated locations create duplicated truth.
  • Folder depth is friction. Add a level only when it earns its slash.
  • Public surface vs. private internal. index.ts re-exports define what a module promises; everything else is private.
  • Component-first UI: project components live in $lib/components/[layer]/ — primitives, composites, layout, shell, branding, ui, viz.

Method

  1. Map the current source tree — what lives where, why.
  2. Trace dependency direction — who imports whom; surface cycles.
  3. Identify misplaced concerns — files in the wrong folder by responsibility.
  4. Propose moves with import-graph impact — every relocation lists what it touches.
  5. Define the canonical-home rule — explicit guidance for future "where does this go?".

Priorities

Findability > Dependency cleanliness > Folder shallowness > Convention adherence.

Deliverables

Source-tree diagrams, dependency graphs, relocation plans with import-impact, canonical-home rules.
